TruScreen Group Limited (NZX:TRU) has partnered with Lagos State University Teaching Hospital and Lagos State University College of Medicine to apply for funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The proposal targets a program focused on cost-effective diagnostic tools and aims to improve cervical cancer screening in Nigeria. The study will evaluate TruScreen’s AI-enabled device in a “screen-and-treat” model designed for low-resource settings. With limited access to labs and specialists in many regions, the initiative seeks to deliver real-time, accessible screening solutions and reduce mortality rates associated with cervical cancer.

What Is the Objective of the Proposed Study?

The study aims to address the urgent need for affordable and scalable cervical cancer screening in Nigeria, where access to laboratory infrastructure and trained personnel remains limited. Led by a specialist at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, the research will validate a same-visit “screen-and-treat” approach. This model combines TruScreen’s AI-powered screening device with immediate treatment using thermal ablation. The goal is to create a practical, decentralised solution that can be deployed in rural clinics, enabling early detection and treatment while reducing patient drop-off between diagnosis and care.

The collaboration carries strong strategic potential due to the influence of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital in national healthcare policy. As a leading referral centre and advisor to the Nigerian government, its involvement increases the likelihood that successful outcomes could shape national screening guidelines. A positive grant decision from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation would also generate the first regional validation data for TruScreen’s technology in West Africa.
