Stanmore Resources Ltd (ASX: SMR)

Stanmore Resources Ltd (ASX: SMR) is an ASX listed entity involved in the exploration, development, production, and sale of metallurgical coal in Australia.

Recommendation RationaleSELL at AUD 3.970

  • Profit Booking: SMR’s share price has surpassed R1 level recommended on 3 June 2024; and thus, it offered a profit booking opportunity.
  • Overvalued Multiples: On a forward 12-month basis – key trading multiples (EV/EBITDA, Price/Earnings, and Price/Cash Flow) are higher than the average of Energy sector.
  • Technical Standpoint: The momentum oscillator, 14-day RSI (~73.84) is in the overbought zone; and thus, price can face correction from the current levels.
  • Decline in PAT: During FY23, Profit After Tax (PAT) declined by 35%, YoY. Moreover, lower average coal sales price and increased production costs brought down the cash generated.
  • Change in Industry Dynamics: Australia's metallurgical coal export earnings are expected to decline from AU$61 billion in 2023–24 to AU$42 billion by 2025–26 and the prices are expected to decline to US$208/t by 2026 from US$264/t.
