Taiga Building Products (TSE:TBL) has had a great run on the share market with its stock up by a significant 19% over the last three months. Given the company's impressive performance, we decided to study its financial indicators more closely as a company's financial health over the long-term usually dictates market outcomes. Specifically, we decided to study Taiga Building Products' ROE in this article. Return on equity or ROE is an important factor to be considered by a shareholder because it tells them how effectively their capital is being reinvested. In other words, it is a profitability ratio which measures the rate of return on the capital provided by the company's shareholders. View our latest analysis for Taiga Building Products How Is ROE Calculated? The formula for ROE is: Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity So, based on the above formula, the ROE for Taiga Building Products is: 25% = CA$89m ÷ CA$355m (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2022). The 'return' is the income the business earned over the last year. So, this means that for every CA$1 of its shareholder's investments, the company generates a profit of CA$0.25. What Has ROE Got To Do With Earnings Growth? We have already established that ROE serves as an efficient profit-generating gauge for a company's future earnings. Based on how much of its profits the company chooses to reinvest or "retain", we are then able to evaluate a company's future ability to generate profits. Assuming everything else remains unchanged, the higher the ROE and profit retention, the higher the growth rate of a company compared to companies that don't necessarily bear these characteristics. Taiga Building Products' Earnings Growth And 25% ROE First thing first, we like that Taiga Building Products has an impressive ROE. Even when compared to the industry average of 22% the company's ROE is pretty decent. Therefore, it might not be wrong to say that the impressive five year 49% net income growth seen by Taiga Building Products was probably achieved as a result of the high ROE. We then compared Taiga Building Products' net income growth with the industry and we're pleased to see that the company's growth figure is higher when compared with the industry which has a growth rate of 35% in the same period. past-earnings-growth Earnings growth is an important metric to consider when valuing a stock. The investor should try to establish if the expected growth or decline in earnings, whichever the case may be, is priced in. This then helps them determine if the stock is placed for a bright or bleak future. One good indicator of expected earnings growth is the P/E ratio which determines the price the market is willing to pay for a stock based on its earnings prospects. So, you may want to check if Taiga Building Products is trading on a high P/E or a low P/E, relative to its industry. Is Taiga Building Products Efficiently Re-investing Its Profits? Taiga Building Products doesn't pay any dividend currently which essentially means that it has been reinvesting all of its profits into the business. This definitely contributes to the high earnings growth number that we discussed above. Summary Overall, we are quite pleased with Taiga Building Products' performance. In particular, it's great to see that the company is investing heavily into its business and along with a high rate of return, that has resulted in a sizeable growth in its earnings.
