As an investor its worth striving to ensure your overall portfolio beats the market average. But its virtually certain that sometimes you will buy stocks that fall short of the market average returns. Unfortunately, that's been the case for longer term Baidu, Inc. (NASDAQ:BIDU) shareholders, since the share price is down 28% in the last three years, falling well short of the market return of around 58%. Contrary to the longer term story, the last month has been good for stockholders, with a share price gain of 8.3%. However, this may be a matter of broader market optimism, since stocks are up 14% in the same time. With that in mind, it's worth seeing if the company's underlying fundamentals have been the driver of long term performance, or if there are some discrepancies. AI is about to change healthcare. In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time. During the unfortunate three years of share price decline, Baidu actually saw its earnings per share (EPS) improve by 33% per year. Given the share price reaction, one might suspect that EPS is not a good guide to the business performance during the period (perhaps due to a one-off loss or gain). Alternatively, growth expectations may have been unreasonable in the past. It's worth taking a look at other metrics, because the EPS growth doesn't seem to match with the falling share price. Revenue is actually up 3.5% over the three years, so the share price drop doesn't seem to hinge on revenue, either. It's probably worth investigating Baidu further; while we may be missing something on this analysis, there might also be an opportunity. A Different Perspective Investors in Baidu had a tough year, with a total loss of 19%, against a market gain of about 13%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 3% over the last half decade. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround.
